8x10 black and white photograph of Star Theater in winter. Accompanying text reads: "Early Waynesboro Movie Theater (circa 1922) Star Theatre operated by Col. Max Patterson and Col. Carl C. Loth from 1922 to 1926 in the building now occupied by the News-Virginian. Original structure was erected in 1878 for the First Presbyterian Church, which occupied it until that church moved to its present location on Wayne Ave. in 1909." After Wayne Theater was built the Star became a dance hall. After the Fishburne School fire, it served a a gym unitl the school's gym could be built. This building is located at the southeast corner of Main Street and Church Street. The Wayne Theatre on West Main Street opened on January 18, 1926, The Star Theatre could not compete with the Wayne and went out of business soon after the Wayne opened. The Wayne was the most long-lived of the Waynesboro theaters, surviving for 73 years until it closed its doors in 1999. Although it was a "silent" theater when built, it converted to show sound films after a few years of operation. |
