Description |
8" x 10" black and white photograph of the Belmont Hotel on RC paper. Information attached to back (handwritten by George Hawke) reads: "The Belmont Hotel was built to serve the Basic City Boom in the 1890s. It was conveniently located for commercial travellers, at the crossing [of] the Chesapeake and Ohio, and the Norfolk and Western Railroads. The hotel contained 25 large, well-furnished rooms, had [a] pool and billiard tables, and Lithia Spring water was piped directly into the hotel and served at the tables. It is now (c 2000) used as apartments." The photograph was probably taken in the 1970's as indicated by the make and model of the car parked in front of the hotel. The Belmont Hotel in Basic City was not as grand as the more well-known Basic City Brandon Hotel, but it boasted electric lights, steam heat, hot and cold water and a billard room It was located west of Commerce Avenue where the C&O railroad crossed the N&W and used by travelers in the 1890s and early 1900s. This building still stands today and is used as an apartment building. |
