8x10 color photograph of aerial view of Fairfax Hall and surrounding buildings. Handwritten on back of photo: "View of Fairfax Hall, formerly Hotel Brandon, built 1890-Became Brandon Institute 1913-1919 and Fairfax Hall Junior College 19220 - closed in 1975. Then used by the Academy for staff development for the Virginia Corrections System. Located in eastern part of Waynesboro, Va., formerly area known as Basic City. Pictured mid 1970's." One stamp on back reads: "Waynesboro-East Augusta Chamber of Commerce" and another reads in part: "Since 1927 Aerial Surveys Henry DeWolf 106 Silverdale Dr...[illegible faded ink]" In 1913, the luxurious Brandon Hotel in Basic City became the coeducational Brandon Institute, with educator and writer Elmer U. Hoenshel, D.D. as president and E. T. Hildebrand as vice president and director of music. In March, 1920, the Brandon Institute was purchased by Professor John Noble Maxwell, renamed Fairfax Hall, and transformed into a finishing school for young ladies. The main building of the school, Brandon Hall, was designed by Stanford White, who also designed the old Madison Square Garden in New York City. From 1932 - 1956 Fairfax Hall operated a fully accredited junior college department. It continued on as a preparatory school until 1975. Faced with rising operating costs and reduced enrollment, the school graduated its last class in May, 1975. |
